The computer is taking on a more and more dominant role in designing and developing product prototypes in a mechanical engineering context. Computer Aided Design (CAD) in general and numerical methods used in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) have become an indispensable tool in, for example, the automotive and aeroplane industry, leading to huge savings in cost and development time. As a consequence, the market for providing CAE software tools and embedded numerical algorithms has grown into a billion dollar industry providing everything from numerical problem solvers to pre- and post-processing tools as well as model building and data analysis.
